Your Privacy, in Plain English
The short, readable version.
Version 3.1 · Last Updated: August 13, 2026 · Effective: August 13, 2026
This is a friendly summary of how Echoes works with your stories. It is not the legal agreement. The Privacy Policy and Terms of Service are the real documents, and they govern if anything here differs.
Your stories belong to you
You own your recordings, your transcripts, your audiobook, and your memoir book. Not us.
We need your permission to store them and turn them into your memoir. That is the only permission we take, and it ends when you delete your account.
We never train AI on your stories
Your stories are not used to teach anyone’s AI. Not ours. Not OpenAI’s.
We also never copy your voice. The audiobook you receive uses your real recording — the actual sound of you telling your story. The narrator between your clips is a stock computer voice, clearly different from yours. We do not create a voiceprint and cannot use your voice to identify you.
Your recordings are locked before they leave your phone
Your recordings and transcripts are scrambled on your device before they go anywhere. The key that unscrambles them lives in your iCloud Keychain, on your own Apple devices.
We do not have that key. We cannot listen to your recordings.
One exception, and we want to be clear about it: when you choose to share a story with your family, we make a second copy without that lock — otherwise your family could not play it. That copy is protected by your family group’s permissions instead.
Who else touches your stories
A few companies help us run Echoes:
- OpenAI powers the interviewer that talks with you.
- Google (Firebase) stores your account and files.
- Apple handles sign-in and purchases made inside the app.
- Stripe handles purchases made on our website — gifts, and Echoes bought for yourself. We never see your card number.
- Netlify hosts our website and counts visits from its own server logs. No script, no tracking cookie.
We do not sell your information to anyone, ever. We do not use it for advertising.
What your family can see
Nothing, until you decide to share.
When you share a story with your family group, they can listen to the recording, see the title and a short preview of the conversation, and leave comments. Everything you have not shared stays private to you. You can unshare a story at any time.
You decide how long we keep things
When you set up Echoes, you choose: keep my recordings forever, for three years, or for one year. A nightly job enforces whichever you pick. You can change it whenever you like.
In Settings you can also delete just your recordings, delete the details we extracted, or delete everything.
Deleting your account erases your data from our systems. One honest note: if you shared stories with a family group, the title, a short preview, and comments may stay visible to that group afterward.
Echoes is not therapy
The interviewer is a computer program. It is not a therapist, a counselor, or a doctor.
If the app notices that a conversation has turned painful, it may pause and show you crisis phone numbers. That check happens on your phone and we keep no record of it.
The app will never call anyone for you. If you or someone you love is in danger, call 911.
A few practical things
- You must be 18 or older to use Echoes, and so must the person being interviewed.
- If you are recording someone else, please ask them first. In California and several other states, the law requires it.
- Echoes Complete costs $199, one time. You can buy it in the app or on our website — same price either way. A gift code never expires — there’s no rush to use it.
- Gifts are claimed on our website, not in the app. Whoever received the gift opens their link, makes their own Echoes account, and everything is already unlocked when they sign into the app. There is no code to type into the app.
- Reading our website doesn’t identify you. The pages where you make an account do keep you signed in, which means your browser stores a sign-in session until you sign out or clear it.
- Please keep your own copies of anything precious. You can export everything from the app.
