This is a friendly summary of how Echoes works with your stories. It is not the legal agreement. The Privacy Policy and Terms of Service are the real documents, and they govern if anything here differs.
Your stories belong to you
You own your recordings, your transcripts, your audiobook, and your memoir book. Not us.
We need your permission to store them and turn them into your memoir. That is the only permission we take, and it ends when you delete your account. We will never use your name, your words, or your voice in our marketing unless you separately say yes in writing.
Your stories don’t train AI unless you say so
Your stories are not used to teach anyone’s AI, ours or our AI providers’, unless you separately say yes.
We also never copy your voice unless you separately say yes. The audiobook you receive uses your real recording — the actual sound of you telling your story, unless you choose the Narrated style, which a stock computer voice reads throughout. The narrator between your clips is a stock computer voice, clearly different from yours. We do not create a voiceprint of you unless you separately say yes.
We keep your stories private
Your recordings and transcripts are encrypted and tied to your account. Your family sees a story only if you choose to share it.
Inside Echoes, only the people who need to run the service and help customers can reach personal information.
Who else touches your stories
A few kinds of companies help us run Echoes:
- A third-party AI service powers the interviewer that talks with you. Your voice and your words go to that service so the interviewer can listen and respond.
- Companies that store your account and files, handle sign-in, process payments, and deliver our emails. We never see your card number.
- Advertising platforms such as Google and Meta, but only on our website and only after you click Accept on the cookie banner. They help us show Echoes ads to people who have visited us and see whether our ads work. If you get our marketing emails, we may also give them a scrambled version of your email address for the same purpose. You can change your mind any time with the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link at the bottom of the page. The app has none of this.
We do not sell your information to anyone, ever. We do not use your stories, recordings, or transcripts for advertising.
What your family can see
Nothing, until you decide to share.
When you share a story with your family group, they can listen to the recording, see the title and a short preview of the conversation, and leave comments. Everything you have not shared stays private to you. You can unshare a story at any time.
You decide how long we keep things
When you set up Echoes, you choose: keep my recordings forever, for three years, or for one year. We delete older recordings automatically to match. You can change it whenever you like.
In Settings you can also delete just your recordings, delete the details we extracted, or delete everything.
Deleting your account erases your stories and your account from our systems. Two honest notes. We keep a few records afterward, such as purchase and gift records and your choice not to receive marketing. And if you shared stories with a family group, the title, a short preview, and comments may stay visible to that group.
Emails from us
We send the emails needed to run Echoes, like gift delivery and receipts. If you opt in, we also send occasional Echoes news and offers. Every one of those has an unsubscribe link, and we keep honoring your choice even if you delete your account.
We only send marketing texts if you separately agree.
If something happens to you, or to us
If your stories were recorded on someone else’s account, such as your son’s or daughter’s, you can still write to us about your recordings.
If an account holder dies or can no longer manage their account, a family member can contact us and we will help.
We will never close your account just because you have not used it. If Echoes ever shuts down, we will email you at least 60 days ahead, and you will be able to download everything during that time.
Echoes is not therapy
The interviewer is a computer program. It is not a therapist, a counselor, or a doctor.
If the app notices that a conversation has turned painful, it may pause and show you crisis phone numbers. That check happens on your phone, and we keep no record of it that is linked to you.
The app will never call anyone for you. If you or someone you love is in danger, call 911.
A few practical things
- You must be 18 or older to use Echoes, and so must the person being interviewed.
- If you are recording someone else, please ask them first. In California and several other states, the law requires it.
- Echoes is a one-time purchase. You can buy it in the app or on our website. A gift code never expires — there’s no rush to use it.
- Gifts are claimed on our website, not in the app. Whoever received the gift opens their link, makes their own Echoes account, and everything is already unlocked when they sign into the app. There is no code to type into the app.
- Reading our website sets no advertising cookies unless you accept the cookie banner. The pages where you make an account do keep you signed in until you sign out.
- Please keep your own copies of anything precious. You can export everything from the app.
